Face Forward Careers in Fashion

There are many different avenues one can go down when they desire a career in fashion. From Fashion designer to celebrity stylist learn all about the hot careers in fashion.

Fashion Designer

Primarily fashion designers create new clothes and accessories. However, their other job tasks may include analyzing fashion trends, marketing, sales, production of garments and accessories, and promotion of their finished products. Fashion designers can attend a two or four year program for a degree in fashion design or fashion merchandising. Generally, most designers start out as interns and move through the ranks as junior designers to design assistant to assistant designer to associate designer to fashion director.

Fashion Merchandising

Fashion merchandisers create and implement displays for stores and catalogs. They are also responsible for designing the layout of department stores, fashion showrooms and trade shows. They have to have a strong familiarity with the consumer market and an artistic flair. Generally, fashion merchandisers hold a bachelors degree in visual or fashion merchandising. They usually begin their career as an assistant and work their way up to visual merchandising director.

Fashion Stylists

Often we think of a fashion stylist as being the brains behind a celebrities look. While that is partially true, fashion stylists also choose wardrobe for photo shoots, commercials, print ads, television, movies and music videos. Additionally, many work as personal stylist to average people in need of fashion advice. Stylists can find employment with magazines, newspapers, retailers, television and film production companies, catalogs, PR firms, advertising agencies and music companies. To be a fashion stylist one must work their way to the top from the ground up. This often means starting out with an internship. Most stylists also earn a degree in fashion design or fashion merchandising but it is not required to work in the field. Networking is everything to the success of a stylist, so they must constantly be gaining new contacts and maintain their existing contacts.

If you are unsure what career path you want to follow in the fashion industry you can begin your education with a degree in either fashion merchandising or fashion design. Either of these degrees can be parlayed into any of the above mentioned career paths once you make your final decision.

A Guide to the Best Fashion and Design Colleges

You might be surprised to learn that if you are choosing a career, there very likely is a school specific to that trade to assist you in a no-filler approach to educating for that employment field. Popular schools that cater to specific careers include anything from culinary arts to criminal justice. Perhaps one of the most popular of these are the fashion and design colleges.

You can literally spend hours sifting through “the best” of what fashion and design colleges there are. The truth is, that a lot of them simply claim to be the best and have no real evidence to support the claim. But through much research I believe that I have compiled a list of three of the strongest and most efficient fashion and design colleges in the country.

These schools all sit at the same level, and therefore there is no order to their listing here.

We can comfortably begin with LIM College. Centered in the heart of Manhattan in New York City, LIM has been creating leaders in the fashion world for many years. Their main draw lies with their undergraduate programs such as fashion merchandising, marketing, management, and visual merchandising. They also offer graduate MBA programs for those seeking a serious stake in the fashion industry.

Another institution that is making a lot of noise in the fashion community is FIDM or more informally known as the Fashion Institute of Merchandising. One of the best things about this school is that it is actually split amongst four campuses, all of which offer the same undergraduate degrees for prospective students. These campuses are located in San Francisco, San Diego, Orange County and Los Angeles. An exciting factoid about FIDM is that they are the location for the shooting of Project Runway, a hit television show that airs on Lifetime.

The last school that deserves a spot at the top of the list of fashion and design colleges is the Academy of Art University. AAU won “Best Fashion Design & Apparel Design & Programs of 2008” for their above and beyond commitment to their students’ future employment. Their commitment includes offering courses and programs online, so that students who cannot move or commute can still hope to have a serious shot at employment in the fashion industry. Some of the companies that pick up AAU graduates include: DKNY, Louis Vuitton, BCBG and many, many more.

These are three very strong schools to get you well on your way to a great job in the fashion industry. You can settle for the countless other schools that litter the internet, but these three have a reputation that make for quite a boost to your resume.

Ideas For Fashion Club Activities

Although many schools sponsor organizations for students interested in art, fashion design and merchandising, some students prefer to form informal fashion clubs. Students join these clubs because they are interested in a career in fashion, or simply want to share their love of fashion with others. Fashion clubs attract members by planning a variety of activities.

A fashion club has numerous options to choose from to complete community service. Project ideas include coat drives, collecting used clothing for disaster relief, raising money for a scholarship fund or supporting a famous fashion charity. Of course, service projects do not have to be related to the fashion industry. Recycling, health walks and food drives are also possibilities.

Club members can engage the student body by supporting school events. This may entail attending school athletic events, concerts and plays. See if the club can sell clothing designed by club members at these events to raise money for future club activities. Other students may be more willing to support and join a fashion club if they sense the club is supportive of other student organizations.

After the club has raised some funds, field trips can be discussed. Field trips can range from as close as in the school itself to hundreds of miles away. Set aside one meeting for club members to go to the school library to check out biographies of famous fashion designers. At the next meeting, hold a discussion on the designers. If the club has the necessary funds and the support and permission of the school administration, excursions off campus may be possible. Trip ideas includes jaunts to department stores, movies, restaurants and local fashion shows.

A major activity a fashion club can undertake is providing its members and others with information about the fashion industry. Many fashion clubs even make guest speakers the cornerstone of each meeting by extending speaking invitations to businesses and organizations associated with the fashion world. After listening to the guest, open up the floor for questions.

Another way to give out information is to organize a career fair. In a large room, arrange tables for representatives from various local baronesses and organizations. High on the list for invitations should be colleges that offer programs fashion programs, area fashion academies, design houses and clothing stores. Other possibilities include modeling schools and agencies, art institutes, beauty schools, wholesale clothing suppliers, and stores that traditionally hire students. Open the career fair to the general student body to encourage more businesses to participate.
